Protection Terms Are Not Interchangeable
One dramatic translation often covers everything, while Thai distinguishes avoidance, obstruction, resilience, prevention and reversal.
แคล้วคลาด: escaping danger
The Thai term แคล้วคลาด, read Khlaeo Khlat, means escaping or avoiding danger. The danger is imagined as missing the person rather than striking without effect, so it should not be translated as invulnerability.
มหาอุด: sealing or obstructing danger
The Thai term มหาอุด, read Maha Ut, means sealing, blocking or obstructing danger. Stories may speak of weapons failing or a route of danger being closed. The common term here is มหาอุด, not มหาอุตม์, and it never justifies weapon testing or unsafe behaviour.
คงกระพันชาตรี: bodily resilience
The Thai term คงกระพันชาตรี, read Khong Kraphan Chatri, means bodily resilience against physical harm. Semantically, มหาอุด obstructs an attack, while คงกระพันชาตรี imagines the body enduring it. The two often accompany yantra, tattoo and warrior-protection traditions.
กันคุณไสย: preventing harmful occult influence
The Thai term กันคุณไสย, read Kan Khunsai, means preventing harmful occult influence. Its key idea is prevention; the Thai concept คุณไสย is broader than the common Chinese label ‘black magic’.
แก้คุณไสย: removing occult influence
The Thai term แก้คุณไสย, read Kae Khunsai, means removing or reversing harmful occult influence after it is believed to have occurred. It therefore differs from กันคุณไสย, which is preventive.
นิรันตราย: freedom from danger
The Thai term นิรันตราย, read Nirantarai, means freedom from danger or lasting safety. It may also name a particular sacred image or object rather than an independent rite.
