About TAMRA

Knowledge worth keeping. A community without borders.

TAMRA began with a simple wish: to give scattered knowledge about Thai amulets a lasting home—somewhere people can find it, understand it and return to it. Just as importantly, we want collectors and enthusiasts from different countries and language communities to get to know one another.

Good information should outlast a feed

The idea grew out of a difficulty we kept encountering in the amulet community. In Thailand and overseas alike, accounts of teachers’ lives, temple histories, discussions of editions and moulds, and observations gathered over years are often scattered across Facebook posts, groups and sales listings. A valuable account may be easy to read today but hard to find when we want to check it months later. Even remembering a few keywords does not always bring us back to the original.

Social platforms bring people together and help information travel quickly. A feed, however, is not always the best place to organise knowledge for long-term reference. We hope to fill that gap: connecting scattered pieces, gradually organising them by teacher, temple, region and subject, and keeping their sources alongside room for additions and corrections. A thoughtful contribution should be able to become the next reader’s starting point.

Language should open doors, not close them

A Thai enthusiast may know a teacher or temple intimately but feel most comfortable sharing that knowledge in Thai. A Chinese-speaking reader eager to learn may miss important details simply because of the language barrier. English-speaking readers can face the same distance. Chinese, English and Thai are therefore not decorative options on TAMRA; they are central to the connections we want this platform to make.

Our concern is not simply to replace words in one language with words in another, but to carry their meaning across. Titles, temple names, specialist amulet terms and their cultural context all deserve care. We aim to begin with original Thai material where available, compare it with Chinese and other traceable sources, and write naturally in each language. No language guarantees accuracy. Where accounts disagree, we should explain the disagreement; where a question remains open, we should say so.

A meeting place for knowledge and exchange

We hope TAMRA will grow beyond a place to read into a meeting place for amulet enthusiasts around the world. Newcomers should be able to build their understanding; experienced collectors should be able to share observations, ask questions and contribute information. Buyers and sellers should be able to get to know one another with clearer information at hand. Everyone deserves to be taken seriously, regardless of where they come from or which language they use.

Those connections should work both ways. Thai collectors and dealers should be able to reach enthusiasts overseas, while Chinese-speaking owners and collectors elsewhere should be able to introduce their pieces to buyers in Thailand. Our aim is to develop clear trading rules, meaningful disclosures and ways to communicate, so exchange need not remain confined to people who share a language or live nearby. Beyond a single sale, we care about the possibility of a lasting relationship built on mutual respect.

Trust is earned, one careful step at a time

We do not want to call ourselves an authority and ask readers to trust us on that basis. What matters more is where information comes from, what can be checked, what belongs to local tradition or personal interpretation, and whether we are willing to correct mistakes. Respecting faith does not mean treating every legend as documented history. Welcoming discussion does not mean treating a vote as authentication. These are distinctions we intend to preserve.

Our ambition is not to make everyone accept the same answer. It is to offer fuller information, fewer language barriers and a place where people can ask questions freely and discuss them thoughtfully. Knowledge should not disappear when a post slips down a feed, and people should not miss the chance to meet because of borders or language. That is what TAMRA is working towards, one step at a time.
