About this chant

This short Pali passage begins Idaṁ me, dedicating the merit of good deeds to relatives and wishing them happiness. In Thai practice, such words accompany kruat nam, the water-pouring rite of dedication. Thai Sangha material includes these two lines. This is a short passage, not the whole Tirokuḍḍa Kaṇḍa.

Purpose and use: After giving, making an offering to the Sangha, or another good deed, recollect the kindness of departed relatives and express gratitude by dedicating merit. Tirokuḍḍa Kaṇḍa places the wish in the context of offerings for departed relatives. Good deeds come first, followed by the wish to share their merit. This recording repeats the complete two-line passage three times for following along; that count is not a universal ritual requirement.

Meaning: May this merit be for my relatives; may my relatives be happy.
