About this chant
Namo tassa is a short Pali passage paying homage to the Buddha, also known in Chinese as 佛首經. In Thailand, the practice of reciting it three times is commonly called ตั้งนะโมสามจบ. Thai morning and evening chanting books place it among the opening passages of homage; Amaravati Monastery’s chanting book also specifies three repetitions. This page gives that complete threefold form.
The words honour the Blessed One as worthy and fully awakened. Traditionally recited before other chants, undertaking precepts, or hearing Dhamma, the passage begins practice with respect. It contains no request for wealth or reference to a particular amulet. For daily recitation, settle the body and mind, recite all three repetitions at an unhurried pace, and reflect on their meaning.
Meaning: Homage to that Blessed One, the worthy Arahant, the fully and perfectly awakened Buddha. (Recited three times.)
