About this chant

Recollection of the Buddha (Buddhānussati), often called *Itipi so* after its opening words, praises nine qualities of the Buddha. This recording contains the Buddha portion of the recollection, not the whole Dhajagga Sutta. In SN 11.3, recollection of the Buddha, Dhamma, or Sangha is taught to monks who experience fear while alone. Thai chanting traditions also include this passage in praise of the Triple Gem.

The passage can be recited during homage, before meditation, or when seeking composure. Each epithet invites reflection on awakening, wisdom, conduct, and teaching. Its use as a prayer for peace belongs to religious practice; it does not promise protection from physical harm.

Sense of the passage: The Blessed One is worthy, fully awakened, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, well gone, a knower of the world, the unsurpassed trainer of those ready to be trained, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, and blessed.
